“MAKI MAKI” is from the “DNA” series 2024. It illustrates the excitement of being in a group but also an urge to leave it.
It is a new series in which the artist attempts to redevelop her relationship with her origin as a Japanese descent.
Artist Statement:
In starting this new series which had been brewing in my brain since 2021, I immediately needed to revisit one of the pieces I did in 2013 - a piece in which I had sold immediately upon creating on one of the First Fridays in Downtown Honolulu - without making a scan of it for archival reason, nor did it have a title.
DNA series delves into her Japanese origin. This is an attempt to redevelop her relationship with her heritage that she once felt estranged from, avoided, and felt embarrassed for in her adolescence.
